Here were the dye ponds in olden times. Here the bleachers soaked their huge cloths. The steam rising from the wet fabrics enveloped the place in a constant fog. (Hospital of the Ghosts, Intro) In the misty haze between Christmas and New Year's, we poke around in the top-loading washing machine, fiddle with the factory settings, or tangle in the lint trap. Everything is always spinning way too fast. What's a gray haze, where does the soft soap go, and how do you adjust the water hardness again? Washing agents, mixtures of surfactants, dosing aids, or just the whole program? Who's supposed to decide all that now? The drum rattles at 180 revolutions per minute. The detergent sloshes out of the crossfader. The drain gurgles at a low frequency. Then everything starts to clatter. Is the heavy-duty detergent going in now? Overwhelmed by sensory overload or powdered with clothespins, we wallow through sound and foam, churning wetly between washboard techno or house music. Surfactant tent or rinse aid compartment, colored clothesline or delicate cycle. Thirty hours of soaking wet, temperature plunge in the spin cycle, and then, for the boiling point landing, either fabric softener or extra dry, bleached or bright red, stain-removing or deep-pore clean. Just never read the care label: "60 degrees, 90 degrees, 100 degrees, powder only." "Turn on the tap - it can all be that simple." (dachshund blood, going to do laundry)
