Here it is again, the mother of all indie parties!
Who would have thought it decades ago on that Friday in May 1996? A small party at Huxleys Jr. in Berlin Neukölln, complete with a Carrera racetrack, was the birth of what has since grown into an event agency, Karrera Klub. One of the first bands to play here was a group called "Stiller," later joined by "Sportfreunde Stiller," and the rest is history. Many now-famous bands had their first Berlin gigs at Karrera: Franz Ferdinand, The Kills and The Killers at Roter Salon, Kettcar at Bastard, La Roux at Lovelite, Tomte at the old Privatclub, Bilderbuch, MGMT, Johnossi and Of Monsters And Men at Lido, Arctic Monkeys and The Wombats at Mudd Club, Arcade Fire, The Libertines, The XX, LCD Soundsystem, Shout Out Louds, Maxïmo Park and Mando Diao at the old Magnet, Editors and Kaiser Chiefs at Postbahnhof, Kings Of Leon and Modest Mouse at Columbiaclub, Blond at Badehaus, Mumford & Sons and Two Door Cinema Club at Rosis, and even Adele had her first gig in Berlin, there as a support act at a party. The list seems endless, and the Karrera Klub has hosted legends like Oscar winner Glen Hansard, the Beatsteaks at the far too small Magnet club, Paul Weller at the Schiller Theater, Henry Rollins at the Passionskirche, and even Burt Bacharach at the Admiralspalast!
But the Karrera Klub wasn't just a force to be reckoned with at its home venue. It racked up a string of gigs away from home, playing festivals like Tempelhof Sounds 2022, Primavera Sound in Barcelona, Rock am Ring, Melt! Festival, Immergut, Berlin Festival, Jenseits von Millionen, and at the Malzfabrik. Even in cities like Hamburg, Munich, Vienna, Frankfurt am Main, Stuttgart, Dresden, Bochum, and Leipzig, the records were, and in some cases still are, regularly spun.
The wild journey through the history of independent music from then until now continues! The music of a time when you didn't wear ski goggles on stage. It wasn't about singing barefoot at the piano, or using Auto-Tune to distort your voice. Parties were held in clubs, not mass-market events in huge halls. Karrera Klub serves up that feeling and that sound of yesteryear with a timeless recipe of punk and post-punk, refined with a few dashes of pop and new wave, indie pop, and maybe a touch of grunge. It's all rounded off with 90s Britpop and the 2000s indie revival. That's right, a genre-crossing recipe. Naturally, it comes with a guaranteed good time for dancing and singing along. Mixed and spun by DJ Spencer from Karrera Klub, the founder of the mother of all indie parties in Berlin!
