There's still plenty of room between the chairs - reading & discussion with Streets of Sugar
Either/or. One thing or the other. You have to take a stand! Do you really? Yes and no. And with that, welcome to the gray area. We've come to sow a few seeds of doubt. Because doubt has far too bad a reputation. But when is doubt destructive and when is it appropriate? In times of crisis, war, and a cultural shift to the right, don't we need a clear stance from the left, completely without doubt? Absolutely! At the same time, it has become more important than ever to embrace doubt. Hello contradiction.
Contradictions are irritating. We need more of them. Perhaps the fascists are successful precisely because they have a clear answer for everything?! We don't. We discuss. We doubt. We disagree. With others and sometimes with ourselves. Only those who doubt now and then remain flexible enough to learn. Only those who can tolerate contradictions can understand the world in its overwhelmingly annoying simultaneity. Those who want simple answers will sooner or later end up with the wrong ones.
We're giving you a little preview of the new issue of "Streets of Sugar," which will be published in a few weeks. We'll present some excerpts from our articles and want to discuss them with you. Also, look forward to the big self-test: How much contradiction can you handle?
It will be about the many contradictions that come with having to live as a left-wing person with heart and mind in late capitalism.
This event is for everyone who isn't sure. And everyone who is far too sure. For everyone who is annoyed and yet keeps going. For everyone who doesn't know where to find the strength to keep going. For everyone who has both hope and a bad mood. For everyone who refuses to let their hopelessness spoil their mood. For everyone who prefers to argue rather than remain silent. For everyone who prefers to remain silent rather than argue.
